[June 2023]

Greetings all, and welcome to the June (2023) update for Roguelike Games!

This month the RLG team has been busy focusing on getting more content into the Moralinth Gothic Horror Roleplaying Game, as well as going over existing content and making alterations, additions and editorial changes. As in previous months, the work between the two systems leans a little heavier on the Uncanny Edition side (which is powered by the Cypher System) compared to the Gloom Edition (which is powered by the same system used to run Pathfinder Second Edition), but this is due mostly to the fact Paizo is going through a major shake-up with their Open RPG License and their Pathfinder Second Edition Remaster. Obviously we don't want to be re-writing content when the Remastered version drops around November-time, so instead we're focusing more on getting everything around the rules done for that edition.

This dual-system project is extremely time-intensive, but that's how we love it! Sadly with such a small team this means that some of our related projects haven't been fully updated yet, such as the Gloom Edition section of this website for example, but we're getting there!

Now we know what the updates are about, let's see what the RLG Team has been up to in June!

Moralinth Updates:

It should come as no surprise to anyone who frequents these blog updates that Moralinth has been the prime focus for this month. The majority of the time has been spent writing the included adventure that comes with both Editions of the game, entitled 'The Ties That Bind'. An introductory story that can be used with the included pre-made characters or those created from scratch by the players, The Ties That Bind sees a group of Uncanny investigating a strange murder which is clearly beyond the capability of the local Watch to solve. Armed with their connection to the supernatural, the Player-Characters head down a path that leads to magic, murder and mayhem! As well as The Ties That Bind, work has contined apace on developing new artwork for both Editions, new Gloom Edition mechanics have been ported over from the Uncanny Edition, and the pre-made characters have been finalised.

Moralinth: Uncanny Edition

As the last main section of the Uncanny Edition that requires completing before going to editing and proofreading, the focus for June has been on the free adventure that comes bundled with the core rulebook, being 'The Ties That Bind'. It is our intention here at RLG to make the adventure as easy as possible for the Narrator to navigate with everything from handouts and artwork to statblocks and reference tables all at their fingertips, and as such its not neccessarily a straight-forward job of simply writing the adventure. Once The Ties That Bind is complete, we'll be moving it to internal playtesting, making any alterations as needed and then moving it onto a control group of external playtesters before finalising layout and adding it into the Uncanny Edition of the game.

Uncanny Edition Roadmap Updates:

  • Sample Characters moved from In Development to Draft 1 Complete

  • 'PART IV: ADVENTURE' changed to 'PART VI: The Ties That Bind'

  • 'PART VI: Background & Synopsis' moved from Not Yet Started to In Development

  • 'PART VI: The Ties That Bind (Part 1)' moved from Not Yet Started to In Development

  • 'PART VI: The Ties That Bind (Part 2)' moved from Not Yet Started to In Development

  • 'PART VI: The Ties That Bind (Part 3)' moved from Not Yet Started to In Development

  • 'PART VI: The Ties That Bind (Part 4)' moved from Not Yet Started to In Development

  • 'PART VI: Conclusion' moved from Not Yet Started to In Development

  • 'PART VI: Reference Tables' moved from Not Yet Started to In Development

(You can review the Uncanny Edition Roadmap here)

Moralinth: Gloom Edition

Much like the Uncanny Edition, for June the focus with the Gloom Edition has centered mostly around that edition's version of The Ties That Bind adventure, getting all of the non-rules sections recreated from the Uncanny Edition ready for when the remastered PF2E rules come out in November. On top of that, work has begun on the sections that introduce the rules to a new player as well as extensive work into the character creation system. For anyone familiar with Pathfinder 2e, while some of the Ancestries are mechanically similar in Moralinth to those you might be used to, all of the Classes are entirely different and unique to the Moralinth setting.

Gloom Edition Roadmap Updates:

  • 'Chapter 2: Rules Introduction' moved from Not Yet Started to In Development

  • 'Chapter 3: Creating Your Character' moved from Not Yet Started to In Development

  • 'PART IV: ADVENTURE' changed to 'PART VI: The Ties That Bind'

  • 'PART VI: Background & Synopsis' moved from Not Yet Started to In Development

(You can review the Gloom Edition Roadmap here)

Moralinth Worldbook

The RLG Team continue to work hard on the Moralinth Worldbook, adding new content, art, maps and personality profiles to go alongside in-universe lore, history and rumours. As the Worldbook contains only narrative information it is not constrained by game mechanics and can be developed alongside both Uncanny and Gloom Editions.

Moralinth Quickstarts

Due to the fact the Uncanny Edition of the Quickstart is feature-complete and the Gloom Edition requires additional resources that won't be available until we know the rules changes from PF2E Remastered in November, work on the two Quickstarts have moved down the priority list to allow more focus to be placed on the core rulebooks. As these Quickstarts are designed to come out with at the very start of the crowdfunding campaign, they are still important to the project but do not currently have the resources needed to work on them further.

Roguelike Community

FACEBOOK

The Moralinth Official Facebook Group is the place to visit for quick and conscise updates for those who only want the summarised details of what is happening with Moralinth, and is a great place to see artwork, lore snippets and updates. We're looking to add more to it so that we can add extra information, but we need your help! What sort of things would you like to see included in the Facebook Group that isn't there already? Feel free to leave comments so we can know what is a priority for everyone - and make sure you tell your friends!

DISCORD:

For a more in-depth and interactive playground for all things Moralinth, you can head over to the Morlainth Official Discord Server. We're looking to foster the community and grow it out, and a few of the messages we've received of late have asked for more ways to interact with the game world and well as an increase of setting information. We're looking to try and grant both requests simultaneously, so keep an eye on the Discord for more information! Feel free to invite anyone who you feel might want to follow the project but please remember they need to verify their account when they first join the server (you need to click the little "tick" to be granted the Uncanny role and gain access to all the Cataegories, Channels and Events).

Future Plans

As we move toward a crowdfunding release schedule, there is still plenty of work to be done on both Moralinth Editions as well as their associated Quickstarts and the Worldbook. The Uncanny corebook, Gloom corebook, Uncanny Quickstart, Gloom Quickstart and Worldbook roadmaps will continue to be updated as we hit production milestones, and we're looking to push content to both the Facebook and Discord platforms. Finally but certainly not least, we'll be looking to update RoguelikeGames.co.uk to the reflect the development of the project moving forward, starting with the Gloom Edition section of the site.

....and that wraps up our update for this month! Feel free to drop us a message or come visit us on our Facebook page or our Discord Group if you'd like! Until our next update,

Happy Gaming!

- Adam
